Makeups have a way of making people who uses them feel a boost of confidence, knowing and feeling that they are beautifully enhanced (I say enhanced, because I believe that we are already beautiful as we are) *winks*. And hey, shopping for makeup, playing around with them is just as much fun too!
But one thing that people may overlook when using makeup products on their skin is the importance of preparing your skin before putting on makeup products, AND removing them from your skin before you sleep.
We acknowledge that there are chemical ingredients in makeup products that we can’t allow to seep in and be absorbed by our skin, no matter how safe and good the product is. Because, these ingredients can accumulate and clog our skin pores, which can lead to acne and other skin problems. Not only that, once absorbed into our skin, the chemicals can affect our inner body health. For these very reasons, it is important to prep your skin BEFORE makeup, and later, clear it off AFTER at the end of your day. But for today, let’s focus on the BEFORE phase.
PREPPING SKIN BEFORE PUTTING ON MAKEUP.
First of all, make sure your skin is clean. You can either use a facial cleanser, or even a micellar water. It’s important to start with a clean skin because,
1) You don’t want to put on makeup on a skin that has leftovers of previous makeup and uncleaned dead skins!
2) Uncleaned skin can make your makeup look patchy, uneven and won’t last as long as it can. Imagine painting on a stained canvas; you get what I’m saying, right?
Secondly, use toner! After cleansing your face, all your pores are opened up. Toner will help to shrink and close the skin pores. This will help to allow a smoother application of your makeup! And also, using toner can provide a layer of protection, preventing impurities from clogging your skin pores too easily.
Lastly, moisturizer! Do not skip this, as putting on makeup on a dry skin will make your skin appear cakey. With a well moisturized skin, your makeup will apply evenly and smoothly on your skin. For those with oily skin, a suitable moisturizer (such as a mattifying one) can also help your makeup to stay on longer, and not ‘slip’ off your skin.
Of course, if you choose to put on serum, or essence, you can do it all before your moisturizer. Moisturizer should be the last step before you apply makeup.
Since we’re on the topic of skin prepping before makeup, I’m going to be cheeky and sneak in a word on Primers, although technically it is a makeup product. BUT I want you guys to know that it is an important part of skin prepping too, IF you’re going to put on foundation, especially heavy ones. Primers provide a skin barrier preventing makeup products from going into your skin pores and clogging it. Appearance wise, it will make your skin look flawless once all made up, but skin-health-wise, it is protection for your skin!
